I am a uni student so the main thing i will be using it for is internet connection, word processing and i would also like to install the sims 2 on it. I dont want to spend a lot of money and the computer has to be a dell one. I dont understand all the memory requirements or what is right for me. Any help would be much appreciated.

okay, CPU is like the heart of a computer. Everything goes through it or about it. With todays technology, you should get something with at least 1.3-1.5 Gigabit processing speed. This will help since you are at the uni. The RAM is like the brain stem of teh computer. All information that needs to be done comes here then is executed. Since you are at the uni and you want the SIMS 2, i would suggest at the very least 512 MB of RAM but would advise you to go up to 1 gig of RAM. This will help stop your computer from freezing to taking too long to load things. Now, the brain or storage of teh computer is the Hard Drive. Since it is a lap top, you won't get the extreme amounts available on a desktop. I'd go for somewhere between 40-80 Gigabytes of harddrive or storage space. You might not use all of it but it is alwasy good to know you have it. Now, since you want the internet, i would suggest you get an internal ethernet connection. YOu could buy a card for it but the internal one is just easier. Dell is a pretty decent company for what you pay. I have one as a desktop and haven't really had any problems. Desktops are more upgradeable but their laptop are good too.

I went to dell and checked out a comp for you and the Inspiron E1505 seems like it would do you good. If you set it up the way you want, you should be able to get everything and anything you need for it for less than a 1000 including shipping.

If your gona use it for word processing and wireless connection. I would stick with the basic Dell laptop. Inspiron B130 is the basic one starting at $489. I would recommend the B130 thats configured with a Pentium M 735 processor (better performance over the celeron, decent battery life, and helps with games if you play one) and tack on a DVD Burner (for data backups and data storage - music files etc) comes to a total of 556.

Any other configuration or any general questions feel free to send a message.

Stick with configurations that fit the bidget but not make the laptop sluggish.....You can always add memory later other than paying 68bucks from Dell to move up to 1gb of memory. 512 works fine unless your gona multitask.

The Sims 2 is the most resource intensive thing you would like to do. Check the system requirements for the game, and find a laptop that exceeds those requirements. Any laptop that can play The Sims 2 will easily be able to handle word processing and internet use.

I recently bought a Toshiba note book. Duel processor, good size hard disk and enough memory to suit my needs. Why not look around at other options. All you need is to find a lap top that will meet your needs, I would not reccomend a Dell.

A Dell 9400.It has a dual processor, and plenty of memory for music and files and downloading without making the comp go slow, and already have the wireless card installed. You wont regret this one!

I bought a refurbished Dell laptop about 8 months ago. IMO this is the way to go.

Go to: http://outlet.us.dell.com/ARBOnlineSales/topics/global.aspx/arb/online/en/InventorySearch?c=us&cs=22&l=en&lob=INSP&s=dfh
and uncheck the 'Scratch & Dent' box, then go to the 'Price' box and check the dollar amt that fits your budget. There are TONS of good laptop deals here.

Or if you want something new, browse here: http://www.dell.com/content/products/features.aspx/dds_inspn?c=us&cs=19&l=en&s=dhs
or here: http://www.dell.com/content/products/category.aspx/notebooks?c=us&cs=19&l=en&s=dhs

why does it have to be a dell? dell laptops are of poor quality in my experience, and a Thinkpad or a Mac would be a much better choice in my opinion.
