Hi -- stuck in a rut here in NYC. Is it possible to just pack up and move to another city without having a job waiting? How much would you need to have in savings? What about moving to another country (I am a dual citizen so I have the right to work anywhere in europe or australia)? Problem is I do not have any family or friends anywhere I would want to move (to lean on). Thanks...

I live in San Antonio, TX and I can tell you that the average 1-bedroom apartment (a decent one) will run you about $500-$600 give or take a couple hundred dollars depending what side of town you choose to live in. You didn't state what your occupation was or what kind of work you were interested in so I can't say if we have adequate work for your field. We are very friendly, courteous, and always willing to help people (genuine southern hospitalty is something you have to experience before you use the term), and I'm sure you'd find plenty of loyal friends and aquaintances. One negative thing about San Antonio is that most residents are conservative, Republican, and traditional. I guess it's a southern thing. Not alot of them are liberal in their viewpoints; so if you find that to be opposite of your way of thinking, be prepared to face adversity. LOL That shouldn't stop you from considering though. We don't get nasty snowstorms, it's usually sunny if not hot. That said, we are still one of the fastest growing cities in the U.S.

It really is not as hard as you think. Although it really depends on the type of person you are. Are you willing to take a risk and go? Are you confident and out going enough to make new friends and contacts?

But that really is just a minor detail. The main thing is that you should go! Go somewhere different and unique. There is so much out in this world to be seen and experienced. Different cultures and ways of life. Some of the most beautiful things you will see by moving and traveling only a handful of people ever get the chance. I should not even say chance, I should say more like people do not have enough drive to go see things that they really want to see. Seriously what is more important to you? Money or experiences? The family thing is tough but ask yourself this, who will always be there for you; your family. Would they not want you to go see, meet, and experience new people and cultures and beautiful landscapes. Plus sometimes you gotta leave the nest and go do what you want to do.

I am right now almsot done my degree. For the summer I hoped on a plane and went to Banff, Alberta. I did not go with a job lined up or a place to stay. I ended up meeting someone and crashed with them for a week till I got a job and my own place. Alot of people can be very helpful and friendly if you let them. IF not you can stay at a hostel for like$15-30 a night. Just don't be lazy and everything will work out. Sometimes its very stressful but it eventually works out if you keep focus and don't quit. I am writing this because I had the best summer of life. Imagine waking up to the rocky mountains every morning and smelling the crisp air. The most beautiful place in the world!

So whats it going to be? Be like everyone else and be stuck in a deadend job in a boring or unfriendly big city, or you going to wake up with a smile on your face because you can see the ocean or a mountain or even a new city?

P.S. I had $800 to my name

But you are Berry Sexy. That counts for a lot.

Seriously, it helps to have maybe six months in rent, etc. so you can get a place to live without having to blow money on a hotel or live in some flophouse.

You can express yourself coherently, so you should be able to get some kind of clerical work to tide you over.

I wonder if leaving New York because you're stuck in a rut makes sense. This place is the capital of the world! I think it would be a lot easier to get unstuck while staying here........

I would do some research first. Get a newspaper from that area and check the want ads. Go to www.monster.com and see if there are some jobs in that area. Also look at apt rentals or shares. You can send your resume out and get some interviews and possibly even a job. There are plenty of job opportunities in up and coming areas like Las Vegas, Atlanta, and Austin.

OMG how the heckers do you get a dual citizenship! That is so cool!
but anyhow, why are you in NEw YOrk city when you're a citizen of another continent! lol
anyway, i would think you need a whole oodle of bunched of money because you need to pay rent, food, a few days to find a job, car, clothes, electicity, phone bills, water bills, etc you get what I mean. plus movers to help you pack up your stuff and shipping it to another country, air plane flights back and forth (you probably need to back and forth at least 3 times i would think... iono) good luck!

Absolutely. I did it... my job demoted me and I pack up, sold all my stuff and moved to Seattle in 3 weeks. I didn't have a job waiting, but I had a couple g's to lean on for a month...if you have skills, then you know you can find a job anywhere.

Go for it!

A risky move, the $ you needs depends where you go. Find where you wanna go, ask around, and then figure it out. I wouldn't rush into anything, think it out.
