It is illegal, so the government can make money off of it. If they were legal, than you could grow your own without interference from the police and how could the government make money off of that. Tobacco, the government makes money off of, Alcohol, the government makes money off of, but marijuana would be much more difficult because most everyone has a place to grow a few plants at a time.

Basically, my own opinion is, that the goverment don't want it to be illegal because then they wouldn't need most medications. Think, they give it to cancer patients and it cures their pain. If they started prescribing marijuana to people who suffer back problems and so forth they wouldn't have anyone to sale the medications for. The goverment would make no profit because people would grow their own pott plants. It's all about the goverment and making money. If they don't get a profit it's not going to be legalized. America may be free, but it's all about money and greed.

The larger conspiracy story is that a machine came out that could turn hemp into low-cost paper that was better that tree paper.

William Randolph Hearst had millions tied up in forests and would lose an edge, so he got Harry J Anslinger of the Federal Bureau of narcotics to come up with these tales of how drug crazes Negroes and Mexican would smoke tones of reefer grab and axe and murder people in a binge.

The public, being sheep, bought these lies and forced Congress to decide Pot was bad.

The 1937 Marijuana Tax Act came of it, effectively criminalizing pot

Because after WWII, Pot was thought of as an optiate like herione so it was banned but recent studies show it is in fact not an opiate but the government does not want admit it was wrong and free all the people that were arrested on charges related to pot.

Marijuana impares the judgement of users. Things may seem different once under the influence. You are not as responisble and do not usually think as clearly as you would sober. People have been known to do irresponsible things under the influence.

Because it's not good for you. Unfortunately alcohol and tobaco are legal and too many people would lose jobs if it was made illegal or the goverment would make they illegal too.

It isn't as familiar a drug as alcohol, so our culture is still not used to it.

Give us a maybe fifty to a hundred years. Eventually we'll legalize it, or we'll go back to banning alcohol too. One way or the other. Then we'll swing back to the other extreme.
