Out of the blue this woodpecker decided to peck on my wood sidings...forming a thumb size hole and a crack along the corner of the siding. Two questions:

1) What's the best way to fix the holes?

2) How to make sure my house is not attractive to woodpeckers???

That is not good for a couple of reasons.
One) Of course he is tearing up your house! You have to stop that right?
Two) He is doing it because he hears BUGS behind the siding.

Woodpeckers do not waste there time where they do not find food. If there are woodpeckers knocking on your siding- odds are there are bugs....

Call a GOOD pest company and have them check.

I live in a cedar sided house and wood peckers love it more than I do. They really like to go after the knots in the wood.
Do not use a wood filler in the holes because they will just peck that right back out. What they don't like is silicone. Find a caulk that matches your siding color and fill the holes with that. Make sure it is at least a 25 year silicone. They may hit it one time but they will not hit it again.

The 2nd question is a tuff one. I have tried many things...even a shotgun (even though they are endangered). I got the pest control folks out to my house thinking it was a bug problem but it was not. It was just a wood house problem. Soft wood at that. The best thing I have found is a fake Hawk that moves its head and whistles its attack call. I ordered it from macksprairewings.com about 3 years ago and have only had 2 problems since (when the batteries went dead). My wood peckers actually bored through my cedar planks and made a nest before I got the fake Hawk.

Hope this helps :)

Woodpeckers don't peck for exercise or for wood, they peck for insects. So there must be some kind of infestation on and in your siding. If you can find the critters, bring one to your hardware store. They can tell you what to treat your siding with. Once the bugs are gone the woodpeckers will lose interest in your house. If the siding is natural color Plastic Wood works pretty well. If your going to paint it, Fix-All, (a powder you mix with water) will plug the holes.

Wow are you in trouble!!
First worry about #2....he is there because there is a food source under your siding..or in it..bugs, termites, etc. Get a professional in there quick.

Secondly, they (the professionals) will probably remove the biggest portion of the wood that has the holes to remove/treat the pest problem. The holes, of course, are then no longer a problem. Any few remaining holes can be patched with wood filler, sanded and painted or stained to match the wood that has already been replaced.

Do your little feathered friend a favor and replace his food source. Peanut feeders, suet feeders or even a simple glob of chunky peanut butter on a nearby tree will lure him away from the freshly fixed house.

Best of luck to you and your woodpeckers!

I had that happen to me 3 years ago. After calling an exterminator he told me that most likely its a young bird marking his territory.I didnt want to go the chemical route so they told me to hang a 4 -6 foot bright colored ribbon where he pecks.Birds do not like the movement of the ribbon when the wind blows. Two days later he was gone.
