you need a UPS its basically a battery back up for the comp. just get one that has software for automatic shutdown and get one that will give you about 10 minutes of backup power. plus you can use it as a power conditioner which will help your pc a great deal if you have flucuations in the power.

Two solutions:
Best solution, get a UPS (Uninterupted Power Supply - i.e. backup power). This way if the power goes out you have time to safely save and shut down. A good UPS used to cost lots of money. Now adays you can get some for under $100. Of course the better ones can be up to $500 (or more). Shop around and check the benefits of each.
Other solution is to save often. But this is not a very viable solution especially when working on the net. Programs like Microsoft Word, however, have a setting to auto-save, and normally saves every 10 minutes, but you can shorten it down to as low as you want. MS Word can also usually recover information once it starts back up. So if you are composing a long e'mail or something else, you can first type it in MS Word and then copy and paste it to the net. I don't know exactly what work you do on the net, so can't fully answer this question. But by far it is much better and easier to get a UPS.

Like the others stated, a UPS would be a practical solution. Even if you went with a backup generator you would need to have a UPS till the backup kicks in.
The one I suggests has software that will automatically power down your PC so you do not loose any data if you happen to be away from your PC where the power is lost.

You can spend the money for a special power surge and loss device-- a UPS, which is like a large block that is plugged in. It basically takes over if there is a power surge. Expensive.
A company I worked for this spring got one. I'd never seen one before then.

Yes. Buy the best battery back up that you can afford. APS makes a great unit. Get one that will give you at least the minimal time to close out and shut down properly. It is a worthwhile investment, and in your case, a very necessary one.

Put a floppy disc in your computer.
Save as you go along.
Or right click on your area of work and save it to desktop every so often as you work.
Depending what programs you are using, you can choose floppy or just save to desk top, and possibly to favorites.
