They could possibly lie. Nobody ever really checks if someone was married before unless the wedding happened in the same town. However, if someone has done this, that second marriage isn't legal and will be discovered come tax time. Uncle Sam likes his money and unless someone wants to pay twice, they'd better get it straightened out!
Oh, one more thing....it's also against the law in EVERY state....even Utah now.

I think that in the cases where it has happened they just tick NO in the box where it asks if you have been married before, OR the other marriages took place in another country.

The only way, other than divorce, that I know of is to have a marriage annulled. That is like it never happened.

You can't. Your new marriage will not be valid unless you have discarded the previous one through proper legal channels.

my hubby and i didnt have too, they took our word, but if you are not divorced then its not legal
