The index to a map is called a legend. If you are looking at an individual map, the legend will usually be found at the bottom but sometimes it is found at the top.
If the map is in an atlas, look at the front of the atlas and you will probably find a page with the legend.

usually, a map has a legend located at the upper-right hand side or at the foot of the map..you can start looking for it.

most maps that have symbols have a "key" somewhere to describe the meaning of it's symbols, could be on the opposite side
