Benadryl is an anti-histamine. Histamine is the chemical in your body which is released in allergic inflammatory reactions and causes itching. Benadryl blocks histamine and therefore this response (the itching). A side effect of Benadryl is drowsiness. This sedative effect is why you often see Benadryl or diphenhydramine in many "PM" medications such as Tylenol PM. The sedative effect may help calm your nerves, but the blockage of histamine is what stops the itching. Stress or "nervousness" may also cause the body to release histamine and therefore cause itching. In this case, benadryl stops the itching by blocking the histamine that is released by stress.

This is the most honeset answer you'll get: it's an anti-histamine, so no it won't. But it's all in your head. If you think it'll stop you for itching, then it will. Technically, it won't, but if you believe so much in your head that it will, it will. So if I were you, I'd belive taking sips of water will stop your itching from stress....or better yet....I'd meditate or practice mind deviation so that medicine doesn't need to be involved when it doesn't have to!

I dont know about calming your nerves but it will make you drowsy. For stress relax listen to soft music breath in and out take a nice warm bath and try not to think of whatever is upsetting you.Talk about your problems to someone if you have someone to talk to if not write them down seems dumb but it does help good luck and hope you feel better in whatever your troubles may be.

If it doesn't knock you out completely, it will at least sedate you, so that is kinda like calming you down. Not a good long term plan, though if you need to function well.
