I've been paying my bills online for over 6 yrs, whether at the merchant/credit card site or thru my bank's online bill payment system, and haven't had a problem.

I feel more comfortable making large transactions online than I do sending a large check via US Mail 1st class, wishing/hoping the check gets to its destination and gets credited on time. And because my bill payment system is free, I don't have to go through rolls of postage stamps and books of checks like crazy.

I pay all my bills on line ... well all the ones that I **can** anyways. My water company doesn't have online bill pay.

I find it safe and convenient, and I love not having to write checks, and scrounge up postage stamps!

provided you have good virus/spyware ...etc protection why not; however, keep passwords safe ...etc and consult your bank ...etc other than that I found it extremely helpfull and very safe at least until now that is.
