The reasons of laying him off is due to his bad attitude, bad-mouthing the mgt, can't get along with fellow workers, etc. What drastic thing will he do on his last day in office, your views is appreciated.

Well, I don't think I'd let him hang around all day to find out. If he is being fired he must have been written up or counciled at some point before now, and has failed to change his ways.

If he is to be fired it should be done on a Monday morning. Not a Friday afternoon. If you fire someone on Friday PM they have all weekend to stew about it and aren't able to take any positive action. On monday morning they can start looking for another job right away.

To fire a 60 yrs old man with 10 years of service is already the most drastic thing had been done, so what you expect anything more drastic than this?

He may streak naked through the office. I urge you to reconsider your decision....

Actually he may not take it any better or any worse than another associate. You may hear some backlash and justification from him that he is being terminated solely due to age. However, if you have carefully documented your rationale for letting him go, then you should have no difficulties. Even he tries to pursue some sort of legal recourse, then you have his history in your corner for a valid termination. As a courtesy to him, you may soften the blow by highlighting the contributions that he has made to the company, but in light of his attitude and unwillingness to change, he will not continue working at the company.

Firing and laying off are two different things. You sound as though you anticipate something drastic on his last day, but who could know for sure? Let him go collect unemployment, the rate increase for you might be worth it! He's close to retiring and he should have enough credits to collect Social Security...

To dismiss and lay-off an employee are 2 different actions.

You can dismiss a staff based on his poor performance, attitude or breaking the law etc.

You lay-off a staff because of down-sizing, ceased of operations/business.

In both cases, age is not the issue but it requires tact and courage to execute both actions.

I agree if he was of any age and doing these things then he should be fired. You do not need that kind of bad attitude in the work place no matter the age of the employee.

he could come back the next day with an uzi, he could try to punch someone, or he could say adios mother f-er and walk out the door. keep security on stand by but tell him why he's getting canned. be calm and polite. if/when he starts a ruckus don't yell just sit back and smile calmly, not condescendingly. It's really hard to stay mad when someone isn't taking the bait.

Try telling him the sincerest truth about why you want to let him go. Forget his age, he is still human. It seems he may not like working there anyway.

Has he been fairly warned? He'll probably flip, espcially if he's a firecracker to begin with.
