I think he lived alone because being with someone wasn't what he really wanted. The movies never mention anything about his family so who knows.
Thomas Anderson lived alone because all he wanted was an answer to "What is the Matrix?" His entire apartment was filled with books, articles and a computer searching for whatever was related to the Matrix. Relationships with him wouldn't have lasted. He only had time for that question.
I dont think its a matter of being "The One" and two wouldn't be fitting. They could have wrote the story where he was with someone and say maybe have been a professor. In the real world he was seen as a savior and in the matrix he could have helped people while having a lab set up similarly to what his apartment was.
Thats a lame story line haha and the movie is just better with him being alone and having nothing more important in his life then to find out "What is the Matrix."

Many people live alone. I pretty much live alone. Neo from the Matrix lived alone because no one lived with him.

When you are the one, I would think that a number two would slow you down. But he didn't ever live alone in the real world, only in the Matrix and that was a false reality. Besides it's not uncommon for bachelors to live alone, especially if they are computer nerds. Like us.

Because they were trying to make out that he was a loser and a noob, he lived in a crud apartement and probably didn't have much friends.
