being sick sucks period-no matter where you are!!
gargling with warm salt water will indeed help ( 2 tsp of salt to 8 oz water).
you can also drink warm tea with honey-i like peppermint best when i'm sick....
also try sucking on ice cubes or hard candies-this will help numb the soreness...
take ibuprofen-it will help with the pain and also has an anti-inflammatory in it to help reduce the sore throat swelling. take 200-400mg every 6 hours but no more than 1200mg in 24 hours.
also-take nyquil-it will help you sleep and rest is the best medicine for any illness-when your body is resting-it has more time to heal itself. if you have one-use a warm mist humidifier in your room when you sleep at night-this will help keep the air moist which will prevent your throat from drying out and becoming more sore. you can pick one of these up at any local drugstore for about 15 dollars.
drink plenty of fluids to keep yourself hydrated.

gargling with warm salt water helps me. Don't swallow it just use it as a gargle. Warm tea helps soothe a sore throat also.
I know exactly how you feel being away from home and being sick. I lived for 5 years in the dorm while at college and hated it everytime I got sick. Try and do things that your mom used to do while you were sick to make yourself feel a little better while you are recovering

Gargle with Listerine morning, noon and night for at least 3 days in a row. It usually cures my sore throat. Works best if you begin the treatment as soon as you feel discomfort.

Gargle with warm water and salt, or with an aspirin, but really my best advice is break out your wallet and get some of that green antisthetic stuff. One bottle will last you for years.

get some almost boiling water (are coffee makers still banned in dorms .... but don't most people have them?)
squeeze in some lemon juice, or a few drops of the plastic lemon juice, and honey. Sip slowly.

hot glass of tea and HONEY, add honey the tea will make you sleepy if you want and the honey soothes the throat. simple wierd but it works. to avoid it getting worse dont talk loud and eat things that aren't spicy, milk helps. and the more tea you drink the better hydrated you are so your sore throat will heal.

My grandmother always tells me to mix salt and warm water and gargle it. Probably 3-4 tablespoons per cup of water. Pretty gross but it works. Keep gargling and spitting it out til it's all gone.

big spoon full of honey, boiling water - like your making teas and add some lemon juice - i actually like the flavour and just drink it as a drink but Ive also heard you can add garlic to it which would be a more powerful remedy but it may taste quite unpleasant. good luck

For some reason, licorice helps dull the pains of a soar throat, try eating some black licorice next time it happens.

Get zinc gluconate tablets and let them slowly dissolve in your mouth and wash down your throat. The zinc ions are anti-viral (stops repliction). If your throat is really killing you a great tonic is "tantum"
