The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends exclusive breastfeeding (no water, formula, or other foods) for 6 months, as does the World Health Organization. The AAP also recommends to continue breastfeeding at least until the first birthday, and as long as mutually desired thereafter. The WHO recommends at least 2 years of breastfeeding. Our bodies are designed to receive breastmilk for at least 2-3 years of our lives, so personally I wouldn't be comfortable weaning before 2 years of age unless there was a medical reason to do so.

My daughter weaned herself at 10 months. She was ready for real food. I am currently nursing a 6 month old now-exclusively, no supplements. Everyone has asked me how long. I tell them when we are ready. I don't want a 3 year old attached, but I would pump for her. I guess the same for a bottle. After a year, I plan to start weaning, but if she still wants breastmilk, I will offer a cup. Neither have had a bottle. Just whatever you feel comfortable with. It is your baby and your body.

I breast fed my daughter for 18 months. 12 months of that was part time breastfeeding, and she had formula during the day while I was at work (I couldn't get enough from pumping). She's very healthy (11 years old now), strong and very smart. So go as long as you possibly can - it's best for the baby.

My doctor and the AAP suggest babies be breastfed exclusively for the first 6 months and then for as long as both mom and baby feel comfortable there after. I breastfed my oldest for 12 months, my second one for 6 months (couldn't make enough milk for him), my third baby for 18 months and I'm still breastfeeding my 3 month old (she'll be exclusively breastfed until she's 6 months like my third baby was). Good luck - and do what feels right to you. Follow your instincts.

As long as both you and baby feel comfortable. The recommended is 18 months... or at least 6 months exclusively if possible. I breastfed my 1st son 14 months, 2nd son 27 months, and plan to do as long as possible for my newborn.

2 years at the longest. Some babies are done with breastfeeding on their own. My niece was done at 6 months and her mother had difficulty continuing because her little one just didn't want it anymore.
Just don't be like one my parents at school. She came with her Kindergartener trying to figure out how she was going to give him " his lunch." I was astonished that this lady was still breastfeeding her son.
