I was given the two points (0, 0) and (5, 12). How do you find what y is equal to. I have the given answer: y=(12/5)x, but I can't figure out how the book got that.

First find the slope (m) for the equation y = mx + b

(y2-y1)/(x2-x1)
(12-0)/(5-0)

m=12/5

now plug in a point to solve for b

(0,0) will work

0 = 12/5 * 0 + b

b= 0

so the equation is

y = (12/5)*x

To begin with, they aren't asking for the "y value" but for the equation of the straight line through the two points. You need to know the general form of a straight line: y = m*x + b. Where m and b are teh constants that define the line. You have two sets of x,y points and the equation must be satisfied at those two points. This means that you can put the values of x and y into the equation for each pair of points you have. This gives:

1) 0 = m * 0 + b
2) 12 = m * 5 + b

Simplifying the first equation gives: b = 0
Put that result into the second one: 12 = m * 5 + 0,
So m = 12/5

Now put the values determined for m and b back into the original equation:

y = (12/5)*x

Which is the result you were seeking

To find the slope, calculate the change in 'y' for a change in 'x'.

The slope M is then (12 - 0) / (5 - 0), or 12/5

Now that you know the slope, you can multiply it by any value x to calculate the corresponding value y.

That is, y = M * x, or in this case, y = 12/5 * x

Plug it into the slope formula m=(y2-y1)/(x2-x1), Which is (12-0)/(5-0)= 12/5 Then put it into y=mx+b So y=12/5(x)

(0,0) and (5,12)
m = (12 - 0)/(5 - 0)
m = (12/5)

(0,0), m = (12/5)
0 = (12/5)(0) + b
0 = 0 + b
b = 0

Therefore instead of putting y = (12/5)x + 0, the answer is y = (12/5)x

equation of srainght line

y = mx +c

as it goes through (0,0) 0 = m.0+c => c =0

now y = mx
as it goes thorugh 5 12

so 12 = 5 m
or m = 12/5

so y = 12/5

Now you get y from 2 points I get 2 points from y. shall I get 10 more

y=mx+(c) if there is a value of c
points are (0,0) (5,12)
gradient= y1-y2/x1-x2
= 0-12/0-5
= 12/5
therefore y=(12/5)x
