I don't think so. We cannot blame our failure on the elderly people in the world any more than they can take the credit for our successes. To say either would be a great mistake.

Yes, they have, and are continuing to do so.
On a local basis, they have failed to instill work ethics among their young, and failed to teach the value of boundaries and consequences.
Yes, I was a spoiled child, and enjoyed it. It made it much more difficult than it should have been to become a barely successful and productive member of society. So were most of the people I went to school with. Those of us who have learned, try to completely put our past abuses behind us, rather than continue to dwell on them.
On a national level, few have little idea how much competition the rest of the world is to our standard of living, and yet we keep electing politicians who are mortgaging our future. A failure of medicare and social security will be a concern, but they are more likely to be diminished. The real concern we face is dramatic inflation. The other real challenges are a failure to learn the lessons ourselves, and to instill a competitive imperative among our young to lead the world in hard work, education, and technology.
My brother is a very well known economist, and occasionally I travel with him to carry his luggage and push his wheelchair. This is his way of helping me earn extra money when I am not at my regular job, so I can make up for past financial wastes. When I assist him at those seminars, I am amazed at the level the politicians have mortgaged our future.
Yes. A thousand times yes.
I refer to the USA and with appropriate modifications for health and retirement, to Western Europe.
