A median is a line segment that goes from the vertex to the midpoint of the opposite side.
An altitude is a line segment that is perpendicular to the opposite side.

A median could also be an altitude if it goes to the midpoint and is perpendicular.

A median is a line that divides/bisects a side by two identical segments. It starts on the corner of a triangle.

An altitude is a line that creates 90 degree angles of each side of the line. Like the median, it starts on the corner of a triange.

Think about it this way: altitude is basically height in English vocab words (not math vocab.), yet the only way to be the tallest was to stand up 90 degrees. If you tilt you're not really tall.

Median: Middle. You split something in the middle and create two identical segments.
