If the earth lost it's magnetic field we would be bombarded by cosmic radiation from the sun and other interstellar bodies. Our atmosphere could be blown of our planet much like on mars or the moon and the global temperature would rise. the solar radiation would post likely to promote mutation with in species and the development of new species might occur. But general it can be said that if the earth lost its magnetic field humankind would be very badly affected. In the case of a polar reversal the magnetic field gets weaker over time (length undetermined) and eventually for a time completely disappears and then reforms.

Interesting question, unfortunately even the smallest of items has a magnetic field, so it would be hard to imagine anything else, and while I agree with the energy from the sun and the fact that animals would be confused and compasses would not work properly, the fact that the Earth exists gives it it's field. But if it were to magically disappear, we would all have a very funny feeling, probably lightheaded or sick, and it would not affect gravity so much, that is due to the Earth spinning. So we would notice, and apart from getting more direct sunlight (not completely direct because of the ozone layer) it wouldn't change that much. As a side note, every 1,000 years or so the Earth's magnetic axis flips N to S, and this does not affect anything but compasses.

More likely than that, if the poles reverse themselves, would be that the field exists but is weak & fluctuates, perhaps with several poles which move slowly across the face of the globe. There would be more radiation reaching the surface. The "Northern Lights" would easily be seen @ the Equator some times, dependeng where the wandering poles were located.

I saw this on a geology show on the local Public Broadcastic Service station.

Until the advent of GPS this would have caused major problems to the shipping industry.

Animals that use their sense of the earth's magnetic field to navigate during migration would also have a problem in their travels as well.

We'd be toast. The magnetic field deflects most of the radiation from the Sun. Without it, its pretty unlikely there would be life, at least on the surface.

Yet another good reason to smoke northern lights. I often ponder gratitational effects on aging.
