There are co-workers who take the same subway with me everyday, which is kindda awkward cuz we both know we r from a same company but we never talk to each other. And there are cleaning ladies who clean my office every morning.

How to start a random converstion with these people?

depends on the situation, current events(about work or News) and what kind of personality you think the person has (sporty type, gossip type, etc.).

A simple " hi how doing" is a good start then follow up on her response or if the response is a short "im doing great thank you" thing tell something about yourself and look for hints of interest in the response. Some people are shy so if you want a conversation you need to do all the talking first before they start to open up. Just remember to be warm and friendly in your approach.

you should think of something you both will agree on. Like if you are standing by one of them just say "man today was a lot of work" then hopefully they might reply agreeing with you and there you are

say something about your job- they have to have something to relate to that. if that doesn't work, just try anything like last night's football game score or something you can relate to so you don't stop at a dead end with an awkward silence
