I had a vertical hood piercing a few years ago, and now I have plans to re-pierce the area, this time in a horizontal. The first time I had it done the piercing was quite painful-- an intense, if momentary, stabbing sensation which one might expect to accompany a needle going through one's most sensitive of areas. Much to my embarrassment, I screamed in agony when the needle went through. I was thinking this second time I should numb the pain with a topical anesthetic, but when I went to the piercer she became annoyed and insisted that no reputable piercer would use topical because it's "unethical". The reason she gave was the cream is in a jar and therefore not sterile. But I don't understand, don't they sterilize the area anyway right before the piercing? It's not like that whole area is sterile to begin with.
Also, assuming sterility is not an issue, are there other reasons not to use the topical (NOT local) anesthetic (other than "it takes away from the experience")? Is it ineffective? Is it in any way dangerous? Will it make me hurt worse after the anesthetic wears off?
Finally, would you have any product recommendations? From an internet search it appears there are ones that make you go numb and others that work by cooling.

I have to agree with your piercer as well but she should have been more understanding and given you a better explaination. She is right it is not steril to use a topical anesthetic that comes out of a jar (your fingers have entered the jar without being washed/gloves on and you dont want any extra bacteria in the area right before a piercing). Any anyways, when she sterilizes it, most of it will be wiped away any way. Most topical anesthtics only last about 5 minutes anyway and it won't really help the pain much. your best bet would be to take a few asprin, aleve, w/e it is you perfer before getting the piercing done. And honestly, not to urge you not to get the piercing done, but you might actually be piercing through scar tissue if it has already been pierced and that might even hurt more. I would speak with a different piercer if your's isnt very eager to answer your questions. Piercing artists should be willing to answer any questions you have. After all, you're paing them to preform a painful act on you right? haha. Well good luck, and if you do decided to repierce, I hope it's not as bad as last time (just try to miss the old piercing all together..go behind or infront of where it was)
I also recommed 3 deep breathes right before the piercing is being done. This helps me tons.

A topical anesthetic would be useless on your piercing. The only type of anesthetic that would be effective would be novacane and unless a DR. gave it to you it would be illegal. To take the "sharpness" pain out of the piercing, take 2-3 aleve's 45 minutes before your piercing. Thats about the best you will get without a Dr. present. Sorry and Good Luck

i dont know. Ive had mine pierced twice. Once I had it pierced and later i went to take a shower and it fell out bc the ball wasnt screwed on tight enough. so i had to wait 2 weeks and get it repierced. About the topical cream...when she said the jar isnt sterile... They sterilize you down there but if you put something on it that has been opened already it can be conataminated. I understand that but I dont understand why you couldnt bring her an unopened bottle. and about "taking away from the experience", is everyones own preference. Some people like the acutal process while others get pierced for the way it makes you feel after its healed. Shop around. Get another opinion from another shop. GL I say forget the cream. It only takes a sec.

i know a guy who pulled his own tooth and he went to the drugstore and bought some of the ointment you use for toothache and he thought it would work pretty well but it hurt so bad when he pulled it he passed out and made a mess all over his bathroom and his jaw swelled up like a melon and he looked funny for three days and when he went to the doctor finally the doctor said oh wow i've never seen anything like it and the doctor dumbed up his tooth with a shot and pulled the rest of the tooth becuase it broke off and gave him a bunch of antibiotics and charged him 200.00 and said that he needed false teeth.

i agree with your piercer sorry to say, besides i know a topical would really not do much (its about the equivalent of orajel for the skin) so if you really want to get your piercing re-done...well your just gonna have to suck it up & get it done

Anesthetic injected or ingested must be administered by a doctor or member of his staff. To do so outide of that is illegal in most states.
