I saw a report on 20/20 with John Stosell and followed its advice. At about 5 or 6 months old I would put my son in his bed and say goodnight. You can sing him a little song if you wanted to, just as long as the routine was the same every night. Putting a baby to bed at the same time everynight is about 40% of it. Anyway, the first night I let him cry for 5 minutes. Then I return to him and cover him up again. Don't fuss at them. Say good night again. Then let the baby cry for 10 minutes before returning to the room. If the baby is still crying, repeat above routine adding 5 minutes until they are asleep. Don't give up! commit to trying this for a week at least. Be willing to interupt your own schedule (i.e. stay home and don't go out late at night for a week so the baby goes to bed the same exact time every night). On the second night you will put the baby down and let him cry for 10 minutes initially. And the second time you check on him on the second night, you will wait 15 minutes. I'm telling you this worked for me. After 3 nights it was over. Although, while he was crying, (my husband swears that I let him cry for 3 hours) it felt like forever. Good luck because I think you can do it. Get support from whom ever you can. Don't feel like a "bad mother" because you let the baby cry. You are empowering your baby and allowing him to grow and trust himself. I hope that doesn't sound like a lot of psychological mumbo jumbo but it works.

the answers telling you to sooth her by touching will only create further problems for you later! You'll be back on here asking, how do i get my 3 year old to sleep without rubbing their forehead!! I have 3 children and found if you put a chair next their cot and read a story in a tone of voice that is really slow and boring they'll eventually fall asleep. get a book you enjoy and read that, its not the actual story that their listening to its your voice, after a few nights make the story reading shorter and shorter. in 2-3 weeks you'll be able to just do a 5 minute one then slowly walk out. try it before letting them cry as that's very distressing for everyone especially if your neighbours are close!!

It is going to be hard (emotionally) on you, but try the Ferber method. Basically, put the child in the crib and leave. The baby will cry, but let the child cry for a little while... go in and confort him/her but do not pick the child up. Once calmed, leave again... wait a little longer and repeat the calming if necessary.... keep this up, waiting longer each time. Eventually the child will get sleepy and fall asleep. We only had to do this a couple nights before our sons got used to going to bed and went right to sleep. Routine is also important. Bottle, then read a book, sing a song, whatever your ritual is, do it every night so the pattern is familiar to the child.

Start putting your baby on a schedule that ends with the child getting the last bottle with dinner. You might have to start patting the child's back ,rubbing the back, or doing whatever makes your child feel comfortable going to sleep. Then slowly ween them off that. You can even try give them a stuff animal or doll so they wish their comfort to that.

It's hard, I know! I had my neighbors call the cops when I tried to break my daughter of it. She was really bad (my fault) with having a bottle when going to sleep. I've mostly heard that you just need to break it off clean and quick and let them cry. Which is why I had the cops called but they saw that everything was alright. There's really no way to wean them down. At least, I haven't heard of one.
