To download is to receive data from a remote system, such as a website, server, or other similar systems. A download is any file that is offered for downloading or that has been downloaded.
Installation (or setup) of a program is the act and the effect of putting the program in a computer system so that it can be executed.
Downloading is the process of bringing some data or program to your computer. Installing is configuring the program to run on your computer.
E.g. You will first download the set up file. You then need to run that set up file which means you will be installing the program or software - so that you can use it.

Downloading is receiving the file to be stored on disk. Installing is running an application that sets the system up to handle running an application--this usually involves setting up a registry tree so the application can store information, setting up folders within the "Program Files" directory so it can organize the storage of varios files, which include the main program and data files. In the old DOS days, downloading a file was almost as easy as installing because there was no "install"--the program didn't need any setup and could run from wherever it was located because it was all just a single file.

Downloading traditionally meant transferring data across a network between computers such as the Internet.
Installing usually means loading software into a computer through an operating system so that a program can be run by the computer.
These terms have become mixed in over the years as computers have become more accessible to the non-technical masses.

Downloading is retrieving some file(s) from an external source, normally the internet. Installing is when you execute a file and it basically embeds itself into your computer, after which you can run the program.
For example, if you find a game on the internet you like, first you would download it from the internet to your computer. Once its been downloaded, you would install it so you can play on your computer.

Downloading is the process of bringing some data or program to your computer.
Installing is configuring the program to run on your computer.
Downloading is like going to the store and buying a computer desk and bringing home. But you still can't use it until you install (assemble) it.

downloading is where you let your computer receive something off of the internet that may be installed.
Installing is where your computer opens something whether downloaded or off of a cd or floppy , and puts files of the thing in folders and gets the computer set right to use the thing.
