I've had in-laws for over 20 years now...You just have to suck it up and live with it! You don't have to be best friends or even do anything with her outside of family functions. Just do the best you can when you have to be in the same room. Find a way to be polite, but defend yourself if she attacks! Otherwise...Learn to live with her.

I had a sister-in-law that I alternately hated and loved. She was the fly in the ointment at almost every family gathering. She was ballistic with PMS every month like clockwork, thought everyone's kids but hers were monsters, etc. etc.
I usually just stayed away from her if she was on a tangent about something. But nowadays, I wouldn't put up with it for a minute because I now realize I was teaching her how to treat me and mine. It isn't necessary to get into a brawling argument with her, but when she does something that offends you or pisses you off, let her know right away just how much you will take, related or not. If she is nice, you be nice. If she is mean, take your ball and go home or invite her to leave if she has a problem. You will just have to see your brother when you can. She was his choice, not yours. If it is your husband's sister, you have even more say in the matter of how much you will take. Exert your rights, try to be diplomatic, but don't let her think she can get away with being a b***ch.
Good luck

Try and not beat yourself up about it. You can't like everyone but you sort of have to tolerate in-laws to keep the peace. Just keep remembering that you care about your husband. No one said you had to be best friends with her, right? My sister-in-law is not anyone that I would choose as my friend but she is in my life. I know I can stay around her for a limited amount of time without pulling out my hair so I work hard at making arrangements that I am only around her for that amt of time. I am guessing she probably doesn't like me either. :) If she can tolerate me, I can tolerate her - for her brother's sake. Good luck to you!

I've had run ins with both my sister in law and mother in law. While we chose our spouses, we didn't always think about what their families were like. Cool thing is though... hopefully our interaction with them is limited.
Realize, as I'm sure you probably have, that no one is perfect and we all have our faults. Smile and let it all go... because letting a person control your feelings... allows them to control you and that's not an option... is it?
Good luck

Just be polite when you have to be around her. That's what I do. I smile, say hello & excuse myself to another part of the house because I have "so much to do". I'm not around mine unless I absolutely have to be!
