Good question
As you know, a chemical change is the formation of a chemical from a precursor chemical(s). Basically chemical change comes from a chemical reaction and is driven by a catalyst such as heat, pressure, incompatible chemicals that do not remain stable when mixed, degradation of a chemical (they all have a shelf life!), and, believe it or not light. Yes, some chemicals are light reactive, consider the glow in the dark chemicals that form new chemicals from exposure to light (i.e. cyclic hydrazides mixed with strong bases) The glow from the reaction with light is a physical indication of the chemical change.

There are several causes. I suppose the most common chemical changes occur due to contact. When chemicals interact with each other, they change their properties. Chemicals can change their properties on their own as well, such as with half-life, radiation, isotopes, etc... but the most common, I am sure, occur on contact. If you want a good example of a simple reaction, use fire. Fire is rapid oxidation. When something burns, it is the adding of oxygen to a chemical. Rust is slow oxidation. It can be described as a slow burning process.

Chemical exchange is caused by quantum mechanical nature of identical particles that must be either fermions (waveform must be antisymmetric among particles) or bosons (waveform must be symmetric among particles). This quantum waveform symmetry leads to an effective exchange energy, which has no "force" analogue from classical physics. Some discussion of this exchange interaction can be found at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Exchange_interaction.
