Here is one opinion:

I can't say what K2 is because I am under non-disclosure from Adobe. However, I can say that it is in no way a replacement product forFrameMaker. I also very much doubt that it will replace PageMaker.
When Adobe demoed K2 publicly a few months back, the company made it clear that the product is aimed at Xpress. As many posters to this thread have noted, Xpress does not play well in our long document market because it is
aimed at design-intensive publications such as magazines.

Here's another:

Adobe Framemaker is for large, heavily formatted doc (think big doc sets for major apps). Thus Adobe's reference to it as an enterprise-level solution. Adobe PageMaker is more flexible and more appropriate for those who produce smaller docs which have to change format frequently.

Are you talking about self-publishing or going through a traditional publishing house?

If you are interested in going the traditional route, you won't need to worry at all about formatting your manuscript. The author writes the book, the publisher gets it printed. Your publisher and agent can help you in submitting your manuscript in the most appropriate format.

Even with self-publishers, each one has their own formatting requirements. Check their FAQ section to see which programs they recommend and why!
