Granted some rap actually has a message, but the majority of it played on the radio today is so materialistic it's sad. Can they not think of anything better to talk about than their grills, rims, cars, and stacks?

Im not trying to dog out blacks at all but many of the rappers come from poor broken families and they think that materialistic things will bring them happiness but after a while they see it dont bring real happiness. Claudia see your jumping to conclusions I said many key word many not all. Read and understand that is why the world is in the state it is today.

Sometimes, I ask myself the same question. There really isn't much worth listening to these days in Hip Hop music. The only rappers out recently who defy the same tired themes are probably Common and Kanye West.

This whole trend pretty much started with with Sugar Hill Gang's "Rapper's Delight," in an attempt to really appeal to the inner city demographic. Just like bored housewives love cheesy romance novels, the inner city demographic likes hearing about material goods. It lets them escape and gives them hope too.

you have to take into consideration that most of the current rappers never finished high school. and the other half graduated from State Penn U. Besides that what else is there to talk about that people want to buy.

to da powerlifting grule guy, why you got to say dat about black people. Not all black rappers were from poor black families.
and to mnm75932, rappers write der raps, not songwriters.

i agree with you but don't forget to add that most rappers glorifies violence too i won't call it sad i call it pathetic i stopped listening to rap altogether
