The town David moves into, the aptly named Firetown, symbolizes hell. Hell is symbolized in this story in both a physical sense and in an emotional, intellectual sense. The red dust, vast land, and the abundant chemical pollution represent the physical aspect of hell. The intellectual representation is David's state of confusion and angst. He cannot comprehend life after death, and he repeatedly finds himself questioning God. His inability to understand and the resulting uncertainty about life cause him to feel as if he was in hell.
