No they do not move from shell to shell.
As the snail grows, so does its calcium bicarbonate shell. A snail will close off a section of its shell and add a new chamber as it grows, each chamber being larger than the previous one by a constant factor. As a result, the shells forms a logarithmic spiral. At some point, the snail builds a lip around the opening of the shell, stops growing, and begins reproducing.
The shells of snails and other molluscs, and snail egg casings, are primarily made up of calcium carbonate. Because of this, they need calcium in their diet and watery environment to produce a strong shell.

A snail never leaves its shell until it dies. The snail is permanently attached to the shell by a muscle, and contraction of that muscle pulls the snail inside the shell for protection. The soft parts of the snail grow the same as any other organism, by cell division. The shell, though inorganic, also "grows" with the snail, but not in the same way. The snail has a specialized organ called the mantle which excretes calcium salts, mostly calcium carbonate but sometimes calcium phosphate also. It deposits these salts along the lip of the shell, the thin edge around the opening, and in that way the shell is gradually built and enlarged as the snail grows, kind of like adding a new layer of bricks to the top of a brick wall. I'll have to disagree with one comment made above. Snails do not create chambers inside their shells. The inside of the shell is one continuous coiled chamber, all the way back to the apex (the pointed end) of the shell.

There are many species of snails. Some only grow to 1/4" long, others grow to several inches. I think Apple snails are called that because thats how big they get. Snails keep growing for their whole life, but how fast depends on the species, amount of food and temperature. Some species live for several years. Ian

Spell discussion the correct way and I'll tell you that they grow slowly and do not change their shells like hermit crabs.
