Seriously? Because the DNA doesn't match. In order to function, a cell uses DNA and RNA and such to produce what it needs, and to grow and duplicate. DNA is a double helix that unfolds to reproduce. It is like a zipper.

When the two half DNA try to combine during breeding, the two zippers - as it were - can not close properly. One side or the other is too short. The process stops - dead - in the process.

Some species are close enough that the DNA can match up. A horse and a donkey for example. Breeding produces a mule. But mules can't bred. The two halves don't have all the parts that are needed for breeding.

Some species are close enough to reproduce a new breed, such as wolves and dogs. You get a husky I guess.

;-D Breeding can be fun! Give it a try!

Hybrids are possible if number of DNA molecules(chromosomes) can match in egg and sperm (so if all chromosomes in sperm can find its corresponding pairs in egg). But most hybrids are sterile cause they have problems making germ cells(sperms/egg).
