I just came out of a relationship where the man was biting me. I mean so badly that it broke the skin and I had black bruises that didn't go away for over a month. I don't want to judge I just want to understand how pleasure is received from it.

The biting fetish is a bit normal, it may be as light as a nibble to a nipple or the nape of the neck. Or hard enough to break the skin and leave bruises.
It is more of a Dom fetish showing power and dominance over another, can be used to mark property, or just to invoke pain (in theory pain for endorphins to increase sexual intensity)
As a Sub fetish it can be used to show rebelliousness or used to invoke punishment.
Biting fetishes can be tamed by using mask, muzzles, or bits.
NOTE: Fetishes are of all types, but sharing a fetish with someone must be shared as a wanted fetish. If either person don't like a fetish then that fetish should not be used.

It's prolly something that unless you have the same fetish, you can't understand. I guess some people get turned on by causing pain to others.
