I want to build a garage apartment, here is the site. http://www.archwaypress.com/product.php/625.htm
I want to know how much it will cost to build, what would be the cost of building it if I dont do any of the construction myself, and the cost if I did do all the construction myself. And is it hard to build it if you have never built anything before.

And include the cost of plumbing, electrical, heating vents, everything I would need except appliances and the land.
Thanks

well, if i built it myself it would prob cost about $15000... if u build it yourself it will prob cost about $25000 because u don't know what u r doing and would likely have lots of problems....
if u hired contractors to build it would prob run around $30000... of course prices could vary greatly depending on where u r located and what kind of contractors u hired. (ie: the big company (like the guy who, laughably, wants to charge you $165000) or the skilled 'little guy' (like me) who would do a similar job for about 1/5 the cost)

That is a tough question, it kind of depends where you live. I would say cost to build would be around $75-100K to have built, you might save yourself between $10-15k if you do it yourself. But since you have never done it before, it might be worth it to have someone else do it for you. And you might end up spending more in the long run, if you don't know what you are doing. Unless you know how to be an electrician, plumber, roofer, mason, and a house builder, it will be quite tough, and stressful for you. I guess that depends on your age as well.

Added...Since I don't know the plans on the inside I can't really give you an estimate of how much the plumbing, electrician, etc would cost. And every one has different prices for doing this. Your best bet would be to call them, and have them come give you an estimate. Estimates are usually free, and the most accurate, but make sure it is a trust-worthy company. Most are only out for the almighty dollar and do very poor work.

Added again: Michigan shouldn't be too bad for costs, but try to get estimates if you can. Planning and doing your homework (like you are) will work out for you in the end. Sorry if I wasn't able to help you much : (

I don't know if you have tried looking this question up on other places on the net. Try putting in "cost of building a home" the links might be able to help better in calculating the costs. I don't know, but it is worth the try, right?

I see the 'plans" cost $165, I'd say... If I constructed this, I'd charge you 1000 times what the plans cost.

Do yourself a major favor. Thank you, first of all for admitting your inexperience,,,Ask local contractors what they would charge.

It might be that you can save dollars by doing much of the "finish" work yourself, but don't risk code issues or safety.

It's a pretty decent site though,,,thanks.
