Here's the way to avoid this issue--put the seat and the lid down. First, when you flush, the germs in your toilet are aerosolized by the flushing and can travel 10 feet. Don't know how big your bathroom is, but in mine my toothbrush is well within 10 feet of the toilet. Also, I have cats and a dog and would just as soon they not drink from the toilet. I would think, however, the first reason is more than enough to put the lid down too.

This is a major issue for this reason:
Down is the natural position of the toilet seat, otherwise it wouldn't have a lid.
Have you ever woke up in the middle of the night to go to the bathroom? There is nothing more nauseating than being in a sleepy state, pulling down your panties, and then have the feeling of cold porcelain on your butt compunded by having the splashing of cold water...... EEEWWWW!!! YUCK!!!
Cold porcelain is bad enough, but the thought of sitting on it knowing that you guys missed an hour earlier and didn't wipe it off drives us out of our mind....
Think about it.

Because it looks better down and it's rude for a woman to have to put it back up for a man. It's called common courtesy and having good manners! Besides, women fall in, guys don't, they just urinate all over the seat when it's down and it can easily be cleaned off.

It's a form of mind control. You have to demonstrate that you are considerate and caring and take it for granted that you will get no consideration in return.
It's one of those "tests" that you have to pass, like staying at her place all night without having sex. I think it's passed down from generation to generation.

ring down AND lid down.
