And not feel that way when I was living in Hawaii?? I also feel more at home in Phoenix. Does that mean that I am not an Island person or not really suited to the island life? I have lived in Hawaii for over 10 years though but I never have the feeling that I am back to earth. I have only been in Phoenix for 3 months and I feel that I have moved back to earth and feel very at home here and a lot more so than in Hawaii. Can anyone explain that and does that mean I am not an island person?

Also, why would I feel more at home and that I am back to earth in Phoenix, where I have only recently moved to and have only been living for 3 months than Hawaii where I have lived for over 10 years but I never have that kind of feeling ?

Also, is this a common feeling or not?

Although Hawaii is a great place to live for many reasons, it's not the best place for everyone. I totally know what you mean. I was born and raised in Hawaii but throughout my life I never really felt like I "belonged" there. Felt really claustrophobic and bored though life in Hawaii was all I knew. Moving to California was the best thing I ever did. Though there are some things I miss about Hawaii - namely, my family and friends - as soon as I got here, I knew that this was the right place for me. So I can sympathize with your feeling more at home here on the mainland.

Most of my friends and family that grew up in Hawaii and moved to the mainland ended up moving back sooner or later, whether in one year or twenty, but they were people that loved living in Hawaii to begin with and never had that feeling of being out of place. So I personally don't know anyone who just felt more at home on the mainland like us. I think it does depend on your values. Some people would rather be small fishes in big ponds than big fishes in big ponds. Some people want more opportunities in their careers and more anonymity. Whereas others don't mind being on a small island because they think the benefits of friendly people and beautiful weather outweigh those factors. Don't worry about "normal" or "not normal", just be happy that you've found the place that makes you happy.

And if you do end up missing Hawaii...luckily there are lots of Hawaii people in Arizona, so it's not that difficult to find people (or food) that will remind you of home. Live happy in Phoenix! =)

Stateside means in the US.

I can't relate to feeling at home in Phoenix. I moved here 14 years ago, but it was only supposed to be for 1. I am from the Southeast US (Florida) where there are trees and beaches and rain, which I miss a lot.

I think you will start missing those things too after being in Phoenix for much longer. But many people live here and love it because it never gets very cold and some people like that it rarely rains. If that's how you feel, then welcome!

My guess is that you grew up stateside. That would account for your feeling more at home in Phoenix.

Plus, if you are white, the Hawaiians may not have welcomed you. My sister lived there for a couple of years and she found that she was more accepted when she wore her hair long and straight and maintained a deep tan.

Living in Hawaii is like living in Paradise. It's a laidback life. Why do you prefer Phoenix to Hawaii.? Arizona is dry and hot. Hawaii just got dry and wet season. but there's always a breeze.
