Mono means one, chroma means colour, therefore the combined meaning translates as one colour. Black and white film/paper emulsion was once considered monochromatic or panchromatic (wide range of colours), black and white panchromatic film emulsions can see a wider range of colours than b/w monochromatic film emulsion. some b/w films are orthochromatic they cant be exposed to to red light, therefore can't distinguish between red or black,
monochromatic light is light of one colour or one wavelength.
