I already struggle enough with my weight...always going up and down atleast 10 pounds and currently trying to lose them. Im currently trying to find a birth control that wont make me gain weight. Is there such thing? My 3 options were the pill, the shot, or the patch but they all seem to have that side effect. I have a very slow metabolism & gain weight rapidly so the last thing I need is to gain some more...any ideas (besides having lots of sex to burn calories...haha)

I gained about 40 lbs on the depo shot. My doc told me about the Yasmin brand of birth control pills. He said that they've been shown to cause less weight gain of most forms of birth control. I'm pretty sure it has something to do with Yasmin helping your body to retain less water (bloating) during your cycle. Also, Yaz is an offshoot of Yasmin, and I'm pretty sure that they're very similar to each other, with Yaz having a lower dose of hormones. If you're concerned about your weight, try moderating your carb intake. I've always been a little thick, myself. I've lost 20 lbs in about 2 months on a low carb diet. Be sure to drink lots and lots of water too. The more water you drink, the less water your body will try to retain. I know it sounds a little backwards... but when you don't drink enough water, your body retains more of it to try to maintain a certain level of hydration. When you're taking in a lot of water, your body says "hey, I don't need all this water right now" and you get rid of a bunch of water weight.

There are no studies that show that the pill, the patch or the nuva ring cause weight gain. They may cause an increase in appetite but, how much you eat is obviously up to you. The only method of birth control that is proven to cause weight gain is the depo provera shot.

The reason that so many woman blame the pill for weight gain is because it's easier to blame outside sources for weight (like you blame your metabolism instead of doing what you can to raise your metabolism...it's not something you live and die with) and because many women gain weight in their late teens and mid twenties (end of puberty) and blame the pill but, woman not on the pill gain the same weight.

oh wow, you're not alone! not only did i gain weight when i started birth control last year, but no matter what i ate or how much i exercised, the pounds came off SO slowly, if at all. and it was a lot easier to gain weight. i did some research, and found that the larger the hormone dosage, the more likely the weight gain (in addition to other health risks). then i also found that the birth control method i was on had one of the largest possible dosages. i ended up talking to my obgyn about options with smaller hormone levels. they are just as effective! almost immediately after i switched (to the nuva ring), i lost some of the weight (keeping up with a regular exercise routine, healthy diet etc). the rest of the weight still came off a little slow, but i could really tell the difference in the way my body reacted. so talk to your doctor! it's not worth the frustration....

Well, i am not sure what to tell you, but i myself am on the shot and i weighed 90 pounds when i started like 3 years ago, and now i am a freshman in college and still only weigh 92. So as long as you eat well and excercise regularly as my doctor told me because that was one of my concerns, not to much weight should be gained. I know that everyone has different metabolism and rates of weight gain, but gaining some weight is much better than gaining a child...isnt it?? Unless you want a child, but if you are attempting to go on birth control i will assume that you do not want a child.

That's weird. I always hear about people having weight gain while on birth control, but that has never happened to me and I've been on the patch for three years. I also tried the pill for a couple of months and gaining weight wasn't a side effect.

Condoms! There are more things to worry about than just getting pregnant! Condoms don't make you put on more weight, use the ones with the spermicide just in case. Most planned parent hoods will even show you how to put them on a man, just in case he doesn't know the correct way to do it.

Pregnancy isn't a disease, but HIV, chlamydia, syphilis, ghonorea(sp?) and herpes are.
