till i purchased to close the top of your question i idea you were asking a generalised question of no matter if love would also be selfless or egocentric. i'd have responded that the affection i have for my son is punctiliously selfless and unconditional yet I even realize you're speaking about love between adults in a relationship. in my view in case you genuine love any man or woman it really is selfless contained in the feel that you want their happiness above your own yet actually a relationship needs both area to take section and nurture it. If my husband counseled me he no longer cherished me the relationship couldn't proceed, it could be unfair to both party, each and each can must be loose to be with any man or woman else that loves you again. So i think that the easily which technique of love is to grant and it could be an advantage in case you also receive love from that man or woman, and that a relationship can not proceed longterm if only one human being is doing the loving!

Let us hope that is not entirely selfless.
The Golden Rule "Love the God will all your heart, mind & soul; Love your neighbor as you Love yourself," is actually 3 commandments.
1. Love The God
2. Love Neghbor
3. Love Yourself
Loving self is important because it gives one a standard by which the Neighbor should be Loved.
It is more about balance and not about binary polarized thought or action. One must have something for oneself, so that something of Love is available to share.
The key is the delicate balance of the selfless & selfish. There is time & place for everything.

It should be, however most people never realize true love. They only realize the perception of love. True love rarely exists in relationships between lovers or spouses, it mostly exists in a parent/child form. Ex. How many people try to hold onto a relationship out of greed even though they know the other person would be happy apart?

Yes, love is selfless. By its very nature. It would be something else if it was not selfless.

that's a good question let see i would say love is selfless cause you can give it and it should never matter if it is given back because it never wrong to open your heart to anyone or anything

Selfish. Love is YOUR desire for someone. You can be content with taking whatever you get, but you're loving for yourself, not for someone else's sake.
Don't let the word 'selfish' put you off though, the word is so far mis-interpreted sometimes. It's not bad to be selfish with emotions. You are never more honest to yourself then when you're selfish.,

Yes, because to truly love you have to love your self, to receive love you have to love like you want to be loved.

To give and expect is selfish
You cant give love and expect it back
it should be unconditional if not that wasn't love that was lust!
just my opinion! (smile)
