Every deed is different and often the mineral and surface rights are separated. You must look at the details of your own rights, or the details of any deed you are aquiring to determine the actual mineral rights you own or will aquire. In some cases you will own a portion of the mineral rights despite total surface right ownership (with the exception of the rights mineral exploiters will leverage based on their right to mineral access).

Yeah I know a local farmer who had problems one year because he his crops were suffering from drought. He paid to have a borehole dug and lo and behold there was plenty of water down there to irrigate his crops.
Then of course the local water board put a meter on it.

Cirric is right. I have a bit of land in New Zealand, but if oil was discovered on it, the oil does not belong to me.
