Depends on the country. In the U.S. at least, the government takes a paternalistic approach to laws, that is, there are laws saying what you can and cannot do to yourself. For instance, you have to wear a seatbelt and you have to wear a helmet while riding a motorcycle or you get a fine. Thus, attempting suicide is illegal.
Some countries might take an approach similar to John Stuart Mill's by saying freedom means allowing people to do whatever they want as long as they do not infringe other people's rights. In that case, attempting to commit suicide is legal.

Yes, it is a crime. There is a law against it. It is the same law that allows you to be held in a locked ward in the hospital against your will. If you attempt suicide, you will be held for at least 72 hours, and probably longer. After 72 hours the hospital has to get a court order to keep you. Following an attempted suicide, that court order will be very easy for the hospital to get.

in the US yes
Suicide has a negative view in the United States, which is reflected in the law. Its most significant development was due to Judeo-Christian beliefs and the development of English law. Before that period, however, there were famous, if not glorious, suicides such as Cato the Younger who rationalized this self-destructive act as exercising his right "to set himself at liberty," arguing that a man be permitted to do what he will with his own life.(4) Socrates' drinking of hemlock is also worthy of mention as a literary and historic case of suicide based on martyrdom for his teachings of truth and virtue. Additionally, there are six cases of suicide reported in the Bible, although the Bible neither condemns nor prohibits suicide.(5)

How ironic would it be if attempting suicide were punishable by death? If it were a crime would it really matter, as long as you succeeded? If it were a crime, then would it be a bigger incentive to succeed?

It's against the law if that's what you mean. don't think you would actually get charged for trying it and you definitely wouldn't if you succeeded.
