It's a pretty simple problem - just take it step by step.
5x + 14 + (-2x) = 9 + -(4x+2)

First, distribute the negative sign over the brackets.
5x + 14 - 2x = 9 - 4x - 2

Next, add 4x to each side:
5x + 14 - 2x + 4x = 9 - 2

Subtract 14 from both sides:
5x - 2x + 4x = 9 - 2 - 14

Combine like terms:
a) 5x - 2x + 4x = 7x
b) 9 - 2 - 14 = -7

Now you have:
7x = -7

Divide both sides by 7, which gives you:
x = -1
-----------------------

*Always* check your answer by plugging the result back into the original equation:
5x +14 + (-2x) = 9 + -(4x+2)
5(-1) + 14 + [-2(-1)] = 9 + -[4(-1) + 2)]
-5 + 14 + 2 = 9 + 4 - 2
11 = 11 <== checks!

Such an easy question?!! God, I wish we'd get ones like this in University Calculus :P LMAO

5x+14+-2x = 9+-(4x+2)

First simplify the equation by adding like terms, basically add the x's. I'll start with the left side

3x + 14 = 9 + -(4x+2)

Now simplify the right side by multiplying each number in the brackets by -1 (see the negative sign?)

3x + 14 = 9 - 4x - 2

Now simplify again, add 4x to both sides to move the -4x over, and then 9-2 is 7

7x + 14 = 7 and now, put all the x's on one side and the constant (14) on the other, so subtract 14 from both sides.

7x = -7 Now divide each side by 7.

x = -1

EASY! :)

First...Use your book and try to understand the examples.

Then, do this problem in steps. Rewrite it as you go so you don't lose track of your progress.

Move same types of numbers all to one side....reversing the signs when you cross to the other side. If there are same type numbers on the same side, don't change the signs.

Sign Rules: when multiplying: two negatives = positive
(+) x (+) = (+)
(-) x (+) = (-)
(-) x (-) = (+)

When adding:
(+) + (+) = (+)
(+) + (-) = (subtract numbers and keep sign of bigger number)
(-) + (-) = (add numbers and keep negative)

When subtracting: ***(two negatives = positive)
(+) - (+) = subtract and keep sign of bigger number ***same as(+) + (-) = bigger number sign EXAMPLE: (6 - 8 = -2)

(-) - (+) = add and keep negative (-) ***same as (-) + (-) = (-) EXAMPLE (-4 - 2 = -6) ***or (-4 + -2 = -6)

(-) - (-) = subtract and keep sign of bigger number ***same as (-) + (+) = bigger number sign EXAMPLE: (-3 - -6 = 3) *** or (-3 + 6 = 3)

5x + 14 + -2x = 9 + (-4x - 2)
3x + 14 = 9 + (-4x -2)
5 = -4x - 2 - 3x
5 = -7x - 2
7 = -7x
1 = x
woot.....i dunno if its right it probably isn't ...
