Sometimes the artist name will have an extra space either before or after the name that you can't see without actually going into the info on iTunes. So any of them that do, check out the names and see where they end. If theres an extra space, delete it, and it'll only be one artist.
Also, there's sometimes a tiny mis-spelling you may not notice. Just look closely and make sure the names are exactly alike. Copy and paste them multiple times if necessary to make sure.

go to itunes and check if you have the artist name

if you have it like this
Ludacris &
Ludacris_(as if it was a space)

then the artist will show up twice

if you have them both equal....the wont be two artist with the same name

I know that happens to me when there's someone else in the song. It says, "Feat. So-and-so." So, what I do, is take that off and put it in the title of the song (instead of the artist column).
If that's not the case, it might be what one of the other people said, I guess...

Because there are more than one song you have on your ipod by that artist.

often has to do with the way they are named, which you would be able to alter. i hit upon it lots much less complicated to make transformations and set up my songs and playlists from my computers' itunes then sync it up.
