For Orleans Parish - which is the same as the city of New Orleans - the population is a little under 200,000, which is approximately 45% of what it was pre-Katrina. Immediately surrounding parish populations are still down as well, but that doesn't take into account all of the temporary citizens such as workers living here now.

If you were to look at the traffic, you would think there are more people in Jefferson and St. Tammany parishes than there ever were. Furthermore, official census numbers aren't going to be taken again for another month or two.

well it is only about a quater of the actual population because most people are not coming back and still looking for a place to live.
