Mine is black, about 6 X 9 inches, has an antennae, several little green dot lights that signal if the power is on, what ports are in use, whether wireless is working, whether dsl is working, whether it's connected to the internet. Mine needs to be connected to my computer by an ethernet cable and plugged into an electrical outlet. I got my from Verizon and installed it and the dsl software when I signed up for dsl.You can buy a router but you have to be sure it is compatible with the high speed service you want to subscribe to--cable, dsl, whatever.

Routers look differnt but generally have: 1 ethernet/or phone/or coxale cable input. and then have 1- X number of out going ehternet ports.
I like Linkys, they have some decent routers, and wireless routers
Also the microsoft routers are GREAT!
