The question from the song was mostly in reference to men being real men and treating women like they're special. Men are increasingly more effeminate, and treating women as objects that they can use and then disregard is increasingly more accepted in society.
The root cause is the 1960s cultural revolution. Metrosexuals are one thing; but how many non-metros shave below the neck somewhere or actually care a great deal about fashion? How many men 50 years ago would fight for their woman vs. today?
Basically, men are neutered today with hardly any power in their relationships with women (the ones they care about, not the objects) when just 50 years ago they were more confident and in charge. Men are different than what they used to be, for better or worse.
