Unless my memory is completely gone, I first visited it when I was married to my first wife -- since we divorced in 1973, it was a long time ago. In those days, it was kind of like "Thoreau in the Rocks". I liked it, because I could imagine really living there.

Some years later I went back. This time it was sort of like Disney on the Rocks. A big parking lot; a large museum; really complex means of walking around the place.

It is nice, just completely different environment than it used to be.

The museum itself is worth the trip with all sorts of memorabilia from days past.

Only time I was at House on a Rock was in 2002. On the way back from the Dells to Chicago. Very kitschy, very eclectic. So many foreign tourists in buses that day. Took a long time walking to go from end to end.

At least I could say I'd been there, even if I don't have the bumper sticker to prove it.

Yeah....that place was cool. I remember the 'infinity room' and the carousel collection most vividly... but I also loved the actual living areas with the seating carved into the rock and the waterfalls, etc in the rooms... really nifty place.
Strange, it's been about 14 years since I visited and for some reason I was just thinking about it yesterday.

I was there about 5 years ago, maybe, and it sounds about the same as your descriptions. I thought it was a great place, but not exciting for the thrill-ride crowd. When I was there, they had gigantic urns in the garden areas outside that had three dimensional lizards/dragons(?) crawling around on them.
