To have a "breakout" year you really have to have played in the league already. I've never heard a guy's rookie year referred to as his breakout year so Malkin is out on semantics.
Gabby is sort of a known commodity so anything he does won't be a big surprise. It'd be more of a surprise if Lemaire opens up the way the Mild play. Demitra...uh, most guys who move in off-season struggle yr. 1 in a new city.
I'd say look for some guy who's on the verge like a Matt Cooke, Ruslan Fedotenko (he'll take Modin's slot on TB), maybe either Flyer rookie Richards or Carter could zoom up. or Colby Armstrong on Pitt.

Well, I'm not sure you understand the term "breakout year" Malkin has very high expectations, so it wouldn't be a break out year if he did well, it would just be him meeting the expectations placed on him. And Gaborik has already proven himself to be a skilled player so there would be no need for a "breakout year", we already know what he can do. I think that Ales Hemsky will have a breakout year though.

I would say Crosby and Ovechkin but they were so good last year I wouldn't call it a "breakout year". They are goign to improve though. Malkin is going to have a pretty good year, but it's not good for him to have a bad start. Right away he's already missing the first 3-4 weeks of the season. I don't know, maybe Steen or Wellwood of the Leafs. They had pretty decent seasons last year. As for goalies, I think Cam Ward and Huet are going to continue where they left off last year. Maybe Raycroft is going to rebound from a bad year last season.

Malkin should easily win rookie of the year when he comes back from the injury. Also, keep an eye on fellow Penguin Jordan Staal if they keep him on the roster. As a Penguin fan, I would also look for goalie Jocelyn Thibault to become comeback player of the year if other things fall into place (Malkin's injury, overall teamwork, etc)

I'll pick two of the newer rookies..
Matt Carle (SJ Sharks) -played only a few games last year, so this is his first full year
Phil Kessel (Boston Bruins) - first NHL season
I'm not guessing either will be anywhere as good as Ovechkin or Crosby, I'm just taking a wild guess at two rookies who will (maybe ;o) have a breakout first full season.
Far as veteran players.. I'll have to think that one over for a while.. Too bad you only get to answer once here.. LOL! ;o)

Mark Bell, San Jose. He is playing on the big line with Joe Thornton and should have a great year. Also Colby Armstrong on the Penguins is going to score 35 goals with Crosby this year.

It will take Malkin a year to adjust to rules, and the physical play. Id have to say Pronger and Niedemayer work well and have a break-out year that will take the Ducks all the way.

Gaborik will have a strong year. Crosby will be even better with some experience under his belt.
Malkin needs to bounce back well from his injury.

Montreal Canadiens own #84 Guillaume Latendresse! He got better stats than Crosby last year in pre-season!
