Tell your mom that it is more unhygenic to swim without a tampon. That would be kinda gross. If you have to, ask one of your best friends that you can trust for one. She'll understand, and I'm sure that she will have one.

Dude, that really sucks. I guess we have it good at our school. If you're on your rag you just get to sit out that time. I think we have a limited number of times, like 4 times in a year or something, though. But we don't get as many points taken off, only like 5 or something.

You should tell your teacher about your situation, unfair though it may seem. S/he will probably understand and not take any points off. Some things are more important than just one day of PE.

You should also explain to your mom about tampons. Okay, using a USED tampon (ooh god grossed myself out) would be unhygenic. But today's tampons are individually packed, disposable, and VERY hygenic. There is absolutely no chance of you getting Toxic Shock Syndrome for wearing a tampon for an hour. Tell her that just because she believes something doesn't mean that she can force you to not do something that you really need to do. You're 14, you should be able to start making some of your own decisions. I mean, some things she obviously knows better, but sometimes, when you KNOW you are completely right, you should win.

SHOW THIS POST TO YOUR MOTHER.

It is not fair for your mom to force YOU to explain HER morals to YOUR teacher. If she expects you to get out of swimming in a public pool because she won't let you use a tampon, then SHE NEEDS TO SIT DOWN WITH YOUR TEACHER.

It is unethical and unsanitary for your mother to demand that other people's children swim in your menstrual blood. THAT IS WHAT WILL HAPPEN if you swim without protection. Would she want YOU to swim in a pool, knowing somebody else had urinated in it?

Modern tampons, properly packaged and used, are very hygenic. You don't have to use a "super" for the hour that you will be in the pool; a "medium" or "light" may do just fine. Tampons also do NOT feel like sex. I've been married almost 20 years, and know about both.

IF THAT DOESN'T HELP...

Your teacher should understand about menstruation. They are trained in the human body, after all, and understand these things. Have your mom call your teacher, and explain that you are having your heaviest period day, and need to stay out of the water. Your teacher should also be DISCREET and PROFESSIONAL enough to handle this. If, on top of your physical condition, your mother can cite some strong cultural or religious convictions about her stance, then the school needs to accept that.

Again, THIS IS YOUR MOTHER'S RESPONSIBILITY, NOT YOURS.

IF SHE REFUSES TO DEAL WITH THIS, AND LEAVES YOU TO YOUR OWN DEVICES, THEN YOU HAVE TO DO WHAT YOU FEEL IS RIGHT.

Be strong, little sister.

Wow hard question. I wish you could educate your Mom on tampons. trust me you dont want to wear a pad in the pool. Looks like if your mom wont let you use tampons you may have to take the bad grade, when she complains then you can tell her why. if your swim coach is cool or you have a counselor at school you might want to talk to them about it. I am a Mom and thank god I can talk to both my kids daughter 20 and son 14 very open and honestly. I have since they were small I did not want them getting untrue info in the bathroom at school. Some kids cant and I understand that, that is why I would suggest your coach or a counselor or another adult you can confide in, my neices always come to me and cant go to their moms! Good luck. I wish more parents were more open with their kids, if they were you would not have to be asking your question here. I meant that with NO disrespect for your Mom. note.....I agree with some of the advice above, but being dishonest with your mom or going behind her back is not good. trust me when I say that.......Mom's always find out. the comment on getting info then presenting it to your mom is good advice.

maybe you could use tampons and not let your parents know just while you are swimming? can you get some before you go to school or ask a friend to bring one for you? and after your swimming class just use a sanitary towel that way yor parents will never know.
maybe approaching the subject with youparents but getting the information you need on menstrual products before hand and talk it over with them about how you feel about using pads, esp when swimming

I would check to see if you can get an exemption from the standard rules due to your familys cultural beliefs.
There is an alternative called a Diva Cup which is a reusable internal cup to use during menstruation, but if your mom isn't crazy about tampons, she probably won't like that idea either.
Sorry that you have to go through this.

well my dear I would not want to be the one swimming in the pool near you while you are on your period and no protection..Grose!!!!! That is very unsanitary. Think about others not just yourself..Would you like to swim with others on their period and no protection? You will just have to find time to make up PE. I see it is after school. Perhaps you are more interested in playing then doing..Just my thoughts though

yes you can swim without any protection, but I don't think that's a good idea. I have heard that while your swimming your flow will not continue, but as soon as you get out of the water it will come rushing out. I don't know how old you are and I'm not trying to tell you to disobey your Mom, but why not borrow a tampon from one of your friends, just for this event.

first of all, i think you should really talk to your mom. tampons are definitely not unhygenic and i think you have to explain it to her somehow. as for the swimming, you can swim without a tampon, trust me. i'm a swimmer and i swim everyday for 3 hours. its fine if you dont use anything, because the water will just absorb anything that comes out of you. dont worry its been tested many times by me. lol

I've heard the same thing about not menstrating while in the water. I would definitely make an exception in this case.
