I'm going to be traveling to China and Japan soon, and I want to know what are some "things" that China and Japan are known for? I would like to come home with some really cool souvenirs!! I know one thing I don't want (personal opinion) is a Kimono... but I would like some suggestions from people who have traveled to those places and found some cool items!! PLMK :]

It depends on who you are shopping for. I would recommend the Oriental Bazaar on the Ginza. They have a variety of things and this is a store that caters to foreigners. So you will get good prices, decent quality and something for everyone on your list. If you are on a tight budget, try a 100yen shop. They are all over Japan. Most are well-stocked and you will find dishes, chopsticks, and cute things for all ages. That's for Japan. I don't know about China...

In China, the most deligacy you should have it's the Chinese caligraphy paintings, any from China are the most interesting, food and snacks are just not for long to keep
In Japan, you should go to buy some of the dolls in kimono traditional costumes. They are good for diplay and tells everything by the traditional of Japanese era.

If you want something long lasting buy cultured pearls or freshwater pearls from Biwa lake. They are of much better quality than I have seen in other parts of the world.

Or for cheap gifts for friends "hello kitty" dressed up like geisha, samurai etc.

Laquerware is very beautiful also. If you come to Tokyo, take out some time to go to the Oriental Bazaar in Harajuku. They have lots of nice things.

Some things I have from Japan are rustic ironware-"nambu tetsu" in Japanese, teakettles etc.; ceramics-tea bowls, etc., ink-stones, brushes and paperweights for calligraphy and a set of "karuta" playing cards. Another good souvenir is the wooden "kokeshi" doll sold at hot-springs, etc. Each area has it's own distinctive pattern.

In Kyoto, there is a street called Teapot Alley -- they have beautiful tea and sake sets -- I am kicking myself for not buying one (we were already overloaded). In Takayama, they are known for their wooden boxes. Many regions have their own specialties and you'll probably see lots of stores selling those things on the beaten path. A big hit with my family was all the Japanese candy from 7-11.
