Different search engines use different ways of ranking. Some sites look for keywords throughout the content of the site. Others look at meta tags. Ive included a couple of sites you can use to get more information.

For Google, it is a company secret since that's how they make money by selling those Sponsored Links. If everyone know how to get their own link to return first, then they won't make as much money. So if someone figure out something, they will probably change the algorithm a bit.

don't know how exactly.. but I know SearchEngine Optimization (SEO) is key
Google SEO
Lot of it has to do with unique header tags for each page that helps describe what's on the page.
Sites linking to yours helps
Information not just ads and products also helps.
I'm not an expert
