"Your mom" is an insult that comes from a very old rhyming game called "the dozens". African American people who lived in urban areas in the early 1900s were observed to play this game, which is arguably the source of rap music. (In the movie "8 Mile" you see the two factory workers playing "the dozens" and when the man loses he says in a contemptuous tone: "Yo mama!" and then everybody snickers. If you ever see reruns of "The Jeffersons" you will see George play "the dozens" with Florence the maid. Also the Rev. Jesse Jackson has played the dozens with people in various public settings, and the now-dead famous lawyer Johnny Cochran-- who defended O.J. Simpson-- is noted for rhyming in court ["if the glove don't fit, you must acquit!"]and various statements-- to the great confusion of white people everywhere.)

You are supposed to insult the other person in rhymes-- you rhyme off the last insult they gave you. For example: "Your feet stink worse than rotten eggs!" and the response would be "At least I don't have skinny legs!"

And you go back and forth with this until someone gets too emotional to think of a rhyme, at which point he or she says: "Yo mama!" as in "I can't think of a rhyme for what you just said, so I'm going to insult your mother instead!"

Because it was considered an even bigger insult to insult your mom instead of you, because she cared for you and raised you. Then, people started enjoying saying it and made jokes and just randomly said "your mom". Maybe in 100 years they'll be saying "Your Computer". Lol.

If you think about it everyone in the 60-90 were really close to their parents (aka the moma's boy generation) so then someone start making fun of their parents. So now to mess with people "your mom" once was offensive.
thats my theory
