loss of respect especially how others perceive you or treat you because everyone loves the rich and successful but not the poor. The rich don't want to connect with the poor in any social gatherings, do you agree?

Good people see you as a person for your values, character, morals, emotions, and intelligence... This all ties in to how you carry yourself. All but the most very shallow should be able to percive these things and treat all others around themselves with respect.

I think your attitude, if you are poor, or if you are rich for that matter, can take away your dignity. We're all human & come into the world in the same way. Rich is a relative thing. How would you feel in the midst of the poor in Africa or India or China? Rich? How would you feel toward those poor?
Of course you said in THIS materialistic society. I think the rich respect the skills of the poor working class & rely on them for everything from fixing their cars to cleaning their houses. Attitude.

It only renders you with low dignity if you allow it to! It's a bit of a generalization to say that the rich don't want to connect with the poor at gatherings- not all rich people are snobs. Some poor people look down on rich people!

Dear God NO! I'm very poor and very happy! I wouldn't want to be rich and famous for anything. Everyone puts so much emphasis on money and do you think it makes a person any more happy? Surely you don't, I would hope you are smarter than that. It's a long hard life for the people who think the only thing that defines a man is money! That is why we have no famous spiritual people in this country. They are all in India where the meaning of life is prevalent. We don't have a clue here because of all the money. You have to be very poor or not care about money in the least in order to obtain spiritual enlightenment. It is the way it is and I cannot change that. One must be truly without in order to understand that we have everything we need within us and not from outside influences. It's like a dog chasing his tail, he will never catch it if your looking outward for answers. All the answers exist from within. Who cares about money and social status? Anyone very spiritual knows this to be the truth.

Not entirely. I think that IF the poor are uneducated (when an education was offered), cannot speak well (when they had a chance to learn), cannot add or subtract (math is taught in all schools,) and in general, throw away all chances to climb out of the hole, then respect may not be warranted. I don't know. But I do know that all are offered the chance, yet daily, we see the results of what a lack of education does ... even here, those who cannot write, spell, or use grammar, are...fairly or not, all but attacked for lack of knowledge. Their questions are only half answered, and often with a "what are you trying to say," when we all know exactly what most are asking. If you are looking for a lack of respect, here is a good example. And I am sure that those answering here are NOT rich.

In a way I must agree with you. But on the other hand, what is rich, and what is poor ? If you're refering to monetary wealth which some people have accumulated, then I say they are the poor ones. Now I don't have much money, but I do have the love of my family and kin, and I do appreciate the fact that I have air to breathe, enough food to eat, and all the water my body needs, and therefore , that makes me one of the richest men in the world.

"Dignity is as dignity does", to paraphrase one source. Many rich and many not-so-rich really believe down deep that their life is worth more to them than your life is worth to you. I have no idea where they might have gotten that idea, but how can a person honestly believe such a thing? Many poor people have low self-esteem, which keeps them poor. The worse they're treated, the worse they feel, as if they deserved to be treated like such. Personally, I don't like the rich. I perceive them as conceited, puffed up with false praise, and just so full of themselves that anyone with any self-respect would want to puke.

No. It is how you think of yourself. The rich think they don't have enough, so they are unhappy and have lower self-esteem. Some poor folk are content with what they have and don't have a problem with low dignity.

I certainly agree with the treatment and perception of the poor. However, no one can take away your dignity, ever. Only you can act like a total *** and loose your dignity.
