I read a lot about this subject. I think it's so interesting. Most cases of MPD have to do with severe child abuse. are there any other known causes?

Multiple Personality Disorder (MPD), also known as Dissociative Identity Disorder (DID), belongs to the class of Identity disorders in the DSM-IV (The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual, Fourth Edition). It is caused when extreme levels of stress cause a person's personality to split into multiple individual personalites. Each personality is a result of a particular problem the individual has with coping with the environment and the new personality is a mechanism created by the psyche to deal with it. For more reading on this subject, the book Sybil is a good novel that also gets into the intricacies that surround this disorder. Good movies to watch might be "Identity", "Me, Myself, and Irene", or "Primal Fear".

Hi..
Most people diagnosed with "MPD", were either physically or sexually abused as children.... Many times when a young child is severely abused, he or she becomes so detached from reality that what is happening, may seem more like a movie or television show than real life... This self-hypnotic state, called "disassociation", is a defense mechanism that protects the child from feeling overwhelmingly intense emotions... Disassociation blocks off these thoughts and emotions.. so that the child is unaware of them... In effect, they become secrets, even from the child....
>>>>>
Not all children, who are severely and repeatedly abused develop multiple personality disorder.... However, if the abuse is repeatedly extreme and the child does not have enough time to recover emotionally, the disassociated thoughts and feelings may begin to take on lives of their own.... Each cluster of thoughts tends to have a common emotional theme such as anger, sadness, or fear.... Eventually, these clusters develop into full-blown personalities, each with its own memory and characteristics....
>>>>>
Several personalities : sharing one body, may have different heart rates, blood pressures, body temperatures, pain tolerances, and eyesight abilities.... Different alters may have different reactions to medications... Sometimes a healthy host can have alters with allergies and even asthma....
>>>>>>
Extraordinary childhood traumas.. usually sexual or other abuse by adults...!

I hope this helped!

Thanks, for the question!

My regards!

Drug use can lead to it as well as eccessive use of medications that are prescribed. Other traumatic events can develop or lead into MPD (or as it's now known DID - Dissociative Identity Disorder).

Look up the American Medical Association's website particularly the DSM-IV (TR) - The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders Version Four, Text Revision. The DSM will have a comprehensive outline of DID and it's symptomology, cause etc.

It's "funny," but there are some cases wherein alters show up only after therapy, indicating the those who have DID are possibly highly suggestible, especially when a therapist is unknowingly trying to "prove" DID. Also, DID symptoms can be role-played. I'm not saying that every documented case is a sham, but this is something to consider before diagnosis.

Many psychologists believe "multiple personality" or dissociative identity disorder is a sham.

First you have someone with 3 personalities, then 16, then 3000 and one of them is a dog.
